Figma's New Brand Redesign - New Typography, Colors, Abstract Shapes, & More

Figma has completely refreshed their branding and style guide. This could mean a whole different future for Figma. From a new font to flat abstract shapes, the new brand is more of an identity shift than a visual change.
Primitives Are Everywhere
Shapes have always been a huge part of visual design. Figma has designed some custom primitive shapes to be used across all different types of products. Some of these shapes are designed to be ambiguous and abstract in nature, so as to fill empty spaces and bring a sense of "fun" to the otherwise enterprise focused tools. They also vary in size, so that they can add more shapes at any point of time.
You will also see that bold black borders are now completely gone, toning down the boldness of the designs. Each shape fits with the others and can be used for animations and to represent various features of their products.
You will also see a lot of line and border animations to depict movement and adjust shapes. More use of border styles and dashed lines can be seen.
Taking Inspiration From The Real World
A lot of the Inspiration for the new Figma design comes from various playgrounds that their design team wanted to pick elements from. They wanted to depict how users interact and play around with their canvas - experimentation in a sandbox.
“The canvas allows people to interact with objects in different ways. A developer might look at something as simple as a rectangle one way, through inspection mode, while a designer may see it from an alternate perspective.” - Damien Correll, Brand Studio Director.
Figma Sans, Their New Font
Figma worked closely with a company called Grill Type, which is a famous Swiss type foundry. They explored different thicknesses, sizes, slants, and more. This allows for a refined and variable font family. You will see this font being used across the Figma logo-type, their website titles, and even graphics.
